Black soldier flies efficiently convert waste into protein and fat and compost. 10 pounds of kitchen scraps will yield 9 pounds of worms. These worms are not a pest as they do no eat when the become adults, they have no mouth. They do not spread germs. They only live 4 days breed and then lay eggs. The actually reduce house fly populations. Best of all they harvest them selves naturally when ready to turn to flies. So all you have to do is connect a hose to a can and they come out when they are ready to be feed for fish and chickens. These worms are often fed to my aquaponic grown fish.

  • Great video.

Just one correction; 10 pounds of scraps will yield about 2 pounds of larvae. I haven't precisely tested this myself but there are a few scientific studies that address it. In some cases the yield was even lower.

Anyway it's cool to see people working with BSF.

    Cheers.

  • Thanks for the info!

  • We have been getting about 2 cups of worms from this system per day. The fish and chickens eat them up. Talk about a cheap natural feed source! We put a water melon rind into the bin after cuttig it up and the worms have eaten most of it in only 2 days. These little guys do a great job of converting waste into free animal food. They also convert cow poo very fast. Someone suggested that they could also process human waste, while true dont do it as efficient as other waste.
