'When Johnny comes marching home' is the American version of the original Irish song: 'Johnny I hardly knew'ya.'
It was an anti-war protest song against the British colonial wars in Ceylon ( Shri Lanka ) at the end of the 18th century.
Sung by British opera singer Benjamin Luxon accompanied by American folk singer Bill Crofut on the banjo.

A superb, heartfelt performance!

  • this is how this song was meant to be recited ... (anti- war )

  • @doUcare4music Given your music preferences I think you would also enjoy Tom Waits ... check him out on YouTube and also check out 'waitswatcher' and 'vamosbabe' who do a lot of Tom's music on YouTube ... their own very compelling interpretations.

  • @anthonylennon1 Anthony, you ask: " How does a culture move from this to X-Factor etc. ???"

Simple, you base your value system on unfettered capitalism and rampant consumption ... that's how !

  • where'd you get his music?

  • @surfer5864 It's from a show that appeared on PBS back in the early '80s
