@peakmoment You've mentioned an issue that is my main concern when it comes to keeping your guns close by: PEOPLE. Spot on.
I have lived all my life near wild animals in the Zona da Mata - MG, Brasil. Sometimes the only thing that will scare off a hurt/confused wolf or panther (in your case bears) is a shot in the air. It's saved me more than one time, especially when exploring the surroundings going furhter than the usual. I've never had to shoot AT any animal so far tho (=

I would not let any bear or predator eat my poultry I shoot them.......

I'm going to start composting and plant a vegetable garden as soon as the weather allows it! Hopefully some day I can have a small self sufficient farm :)

After watching this video, I looked at the number of views thinking it would have only a few (given my assumed level of interest in the subject). But I was surprised to see 166,000 views! It made me happy to see the level of interest in this topic.

@peakmoment Fact remains if the USA stopped exporting food a lot of peopel on earth would starve to death in months.

this video is so sad to watch , before they even started to talk about Self-sufficiency , the news reader talked about terrorists abroad, it's a shame that no one knows about the real terrorists inside the white house for example: after the 2012 elections the s-510 bill will be implemented across USA, this makes it illegal to grow ,sell, share with friends vegetables, seeds, live stock, the true terrorists in washington will kill self sufficiency before it takes off,
I AGREE, GREAT WAY TO LIVE, ONE TIP.
BEAR CONTROL 12 GA. SLUG

@RDLONG30. But this is Bear's home too. How do we share with our non-human neighbors, not exterminate them? Permaculture suggests creating a big fence of berries away from your garden, for bear and others. Or maybe an electric fence to dissuade but not kill.

@peakmoment I'm not a gun lover much less a violent person, but don't be so naive. It is way better to have a gun and NOT need to use it than to need one and not have it. One can NEVER predict how wild animals will act or react, and I'm not pro killing anything, but the guns will protect you and your freedom better, especially now that your politicians are pissing on your Constitution. Fence of berries? HAHA! Your comment proves you are not even a bit ready for life in the wild.

@leesoarez, I appreciate your suggestion. We've lived in the wild for twenty years. Our relationship with the wild animals has been one of learning how to share this land by communicating with one another -- to respect territories, to scare off bears getting too close. The berry fence is a suggestion from a permaculturist -- to give animals what they need, but at a distance from our own gardens. To share.
I have thought about guns for protection against human intruders, rather than animals.

Please do research before saying stuff like "America has been the food supplier for the world" because it just makes you sound stupid. I've watched a few of these videos and the female host always has faulty information presented in the least academic way possible....

@cptnblackbeard, Good catch. This non-academic female host's understanding is that America has been the largest exporter of grains in the world. Doesn't mean America has fed everyone everywhere.
