Western Mass Pol Pummels Southie Doofus in Special Interest Holiday Debate

May 21, 2009- In the midst of a deep recession and many cuts in state government service, Massachusetts State Senators Mike Knapik, of Westfield, and John "Jackie" Hart , of South Boston, debate a budget amendment that would eliminate two special interest holidays. The two holidays, Bunker Hill Day and Evacuation Day (perhaps not coincidentally the same day as St. Patrick's Day) are days off for only public employees in Suffolk County. These special interest holidays are a major hindrance to normal business/life for non-public employees in Boston on those days and a source of great irritation to the 99.9% of Massachusetts citizens who do not get to enjoy those two paid day off.

It's sad that Mr. Hart felt the need to defend these clearly anachronistic gifts to special interests but, as South Boston was once widely known for producing eloquent and clever politicians, it's sadder still is how lame, bumbling, and basically moronic his defense was.

They have to do with the recession because they cost the 99% who don't get a paid day off on them $5-$6 million.

It's especially sad for politicians like Sen. "Jackie White Tie" Hart to offer such lame justifications for this special perk in a recession when people are being laid off, gov't services are being cut, and taxes are being raised.

Don't worry, you can still celebrate any holiday you want, it just means gov't offices in Suffolk County will be open- just like everybody else.

@cbanksy9 the men who did the bulk of the fighting and dying on breed's hill were from central mass and southern new hampshire. the evacuation of boston was the result of the brilliant strategy of washington, a virginian. and you can thank all those "bum fuck" towns in western mass for causing enough trouble in the 1780s that america's leaders decided to sit down and write something called the constitution...maybe you've heard of it.

Other counties don't want a day off and aren't filling the pot holes (that money went to the Big Dig!) Government needs to work for the people (not the other way around) who go to work every day, if they still have a job. Other holidays that have been effected similarly include Martin Luther King Day and Columbus Day (there was a time I got these off as holidays).
