Tried to take a video showing the CPU temps in relation to the fan, as the temps often hover idle around 35 degrees C, which is the temp at which point the fans turn on automatically. This gets quite annoying having the fans cycling on and off about every 2 seconds...
However, what my camera picked up instead I believe is the infamous CPU whine that is being widely reported on the ENVY 14, and is supposedly caused by the processor, mine being a core i5-520M

  • Oh man its way worse IRL than this!

  • @mtowalker

Yours is worse than this? This is as bad as mine gets I'm pretty sure, but yea, it probably is more annoying in real life than a recording of it can convey, but I think it's pretty accurate

  • Ok guys. Had same problem with my Envy 14 i5-460M. Fan randomly going on at full speed, ridiculous noise levels. After lots of research THIS IS HOW I SOLVED IT:

Control Panel > Power Options > Create New Plan. In the options of the plan set Processor Cooling Policy to Passive and the Maximum Processor State to 90%. Reboot and press F10 to access BIOS settings and change Fan Always On to Disabled.

My Envy is now CONSIDERABLY quieter with the fan never going to "hair-dryer" levels like before.

  • im glad i dont have all these issues with my e14.. mine is borderline perfect..

  • the funny thing is that i can't hear the whine from your video over the noise of my hp envy 14's fan.

  • isnt a little bit cpu whining normal?

i mean you can hear those sound always a little bit when you put your ear on the laptop, but in your case its very loud

  • @Xiamenish The Fan Always On option, as the name says, keeps the fan spinning at a relatively high speed at all times. This is not needed, especially if you are only running light task like internet browsing. By deactivating that option the fan will only kick in when the laptop gets very hot, i.e. when you are doing intensive stuff. There's actually a way to check and set the temperature at which the fan will increase speed....

  • @blazingangel187 I have tried it, it work very well! The fan noise became almost like my EliteBook 6930p. Thank you for that! And the reason why I am asking is that if you set the fan always on disable. Don't you think the CPU temperature will increase? I am not sure though. But What I have also tried is to upgrade the BIOS, and with the new BIOS. The fan noise is not as louad as the previously. But this time I didn't disable the Fan Always On. Perhaps it would be even better if I had done it.

  • @Xiamenish why? In what way?

  • @blazingangel187 Do you know if the setting you suggested is going to harm the CPU or other hardware in the long term aspect? I think it works well thought, but just worry about the impact on the laptop itself.

  • sorry i cant hear crap at all, im using the envy 17 and my headphone whine + fan is MUCH worse that whatever your hearing, and its overheating like crap too, double your temperature :P

  • Tip- Get a laptop cooler.
