At 15.35 local time, Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci formally proposed his declaration of independence to MPs in parliament.

He asked members to approve the creation of "a democratic, secular and multi-ethnic republic, conforming to the principles of non-discrimination and equality for all."

He added:

"We are committed to respecting the plan of Marti Ahtisaari, by adopting his text as a basis for the future of Kosovo. Our culture and our history are linked to Europe. And for the future of Kosovo we will unite our efforts so that one day we will find our place within the grand family of Europe. We deeply hope to create good, friendly relations with all our neighbours, including Serbia."

His proposal was greeted with applause by the 109 members present in parliament.

Then, at 15.49, they voted with a show of hands.

Not one arm was raised when the speaker asked if anyone opposed the declaration.

Kosovo had once already made a unilateral declaration of independence in the early 1990s.

Albania was the only country to recognise it.

This time however, Kosovo can count on the support of the West.

  • @TheSystral I used to live in Yugoslavia and have been to all the republics that are now independent. Seven countries ! The same thing is happening in Africa where countries like Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan are being partitioned. In the Caucuses there are several breakaway republics, South Ossetia, Chechnya, Ngorno Karabakh, and more. Plus Mindinao, The Karin in Burma, the Ogaden in Ethiopia, North-South separations in Nigeria, Ivory Coast etc. etc. Will we have 300 countries in 20 years ?

  • @flyguyinmotion

i guess people will always find reasons to be unhappy especially when there are policies that deliberately oppress them. opulent states, corrupt organizations, warlords that appeal to ethnic purity, such things are like a disease.

  • @TheSystral Yes, it's a disturbing trend. Breakaway republics all over the world. From the Caucus's to the Horn of Africa, West Africa and even Greenland. There were about 100 countrie at the end of WWII. There are now 200 and counting. So many failed states. Where does it end ?

  • @flyguyinmotion

the borders of all the countries have always changed, that does not concern just the balkans. one thing has never happend, that a country which gained indipendence turned back. so i guess srbja domination of kosova is history.

  • Celebrate but that is SERBIAN HOLY LAND WE WILL BE BACK SOON!!!!!!!

    KOSOVO JE SRBIJA PSI ALBANSKI!!!!!
