MS PHILIPPINES, TOUGH ACT TO FOLLW

Bianca Manalo, Ms. Philippines 2009, has a tough act to follow. Previous winners from the Philippines, Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margarita Moran in 1973, were witty, intelligent, and stand-outs during their turn in the pageant. Gloria, at five feet five inches tall, was and is the shortest Ms. Universe winner and also the wittiest with her reply to the question about what she would do to the man from the moon if he landed in her front yard. Gloria also created quite a stir when during Ms. Universe functions she would only drink water or milk. Margarita from the get go was the darling of the photographers and won Ms. Photogenic during the preliminaries. Her consistent answers to questions about money and finance and her regal poise clinched the 2nd crown for the Philippines in 5 years.

So that we wont get disappointed next year, let's expect the 2010 Miss U winner will come from the Americas most especially the USA.

Notice how when Venezuela wins the previous year Miss USA wins it the following year?

2 Venezuelan Miss Universes is a surefire justification for Miss USA to get the crown the following year. It simply must!

The other thing that disappointed me was that there were none from Asia on the top 15. There were also no blacks - Misses Ethiopia and Curacao were far outstanding than Albania, USA, even Switzerland. How can that be? Then I saw the judges - they were all whites! I half-expected this was going to be a Miss Universe contest for all white women, and it came as no surprise.

The "symptoms" of a Miss Universe winner has always been this - the moment she steps off the plane, she's already being talked about, most photographed, is in everyon's no. 1 list. This was true during Gloria Diaz's time, her penchant for drinking milk instead of soda, her intelligence and wit, to Margarita Moran, who was judged Ms. Photogenic and was the most eloquent in all the Q&As, not to mention her regal bearing, all the way to Ms. Domincan Republic, Ada Dela Cruz.

Stella Marquez de Araneta has a lot of explaining to do. Why does she keep sending our girls to Colombia? For what? We don't have trainers here? I don't see her point in this.

Miss Philippines may have made quite an impression during the prelims with her swimsuit catwalk. What disappoints me was her gown - the candidates' own choice - and its gift-wrapping paper look. Who the hell designed it? It's fashion backward. The piece de resistence was that ominous bow on her left breast, a perfect recipe for disaster.

Have nothing against Stefania, I think she's deserving. Ms. Dominican Rep my favorite looked nervous in the final Q&A - shades of Miriam Quiambao? Stefania, her youth (she's only 18) belie this fact when she answered the question. And I would not have expected anything less - Venezuela has a Miss Universe school for crying out loud!
