The Amsterdam was a cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company build in 1748.
The ship started its maiden voyage from Texel to Batavia on 8 January 1749, but was wrecked in a storm on the English Channel on 26 January 1749.

The shipwreck was discovered in 1969 in the bay of Bulverhythe, United Kingdom, and is sometimes visible during low tides.

The wreck site is protected under the Protection of Wrecks Act since 1974. Some of the findings from the site are in the Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Centre in Hastings.

A replica of the ship is on display in Amsterdam. It is moored next to the Netherlands Maritime Museum. (At the time this video was made the museum was closed due to undergoing renovations and the replica was temporarily moored at the nearby NEMO science center.)

The replica was built in Iroko wood by 400 volunteers, using tools of the period, between 1985 and 1990 at Lelystad.

  • is this the Ship used (repainted) for the on board scenes of Horatio Hornblower when he is on a 74 gun ship and not on indefatigable ???

  • It's a very bad replica, bad cause it has not been build the original way . Build cause of stealing an idea of the Batavia which seriously has been a scande which complicated the project of he Batavia from begining till the end. Even though the Batavia has been relized on own force and finances. Politics sucs! Respect to Willem Vos and family. So if you realy want to experience a true VOC ship, get into the story of the Batavia.

  • Pirates of the caribbean music? Really?

  • @ppitm

I had the exact same thinking when i saw the video

  • I doubt it ever sails. It is more a floating mock-up than a real ship. Also the Proportions are distorted etc.

  • impressive, .... wil graag een stukje varen
