This vid shows more details on the modifications required to the block and crankcase cover, to convert a 3.5hp model 92902 Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine into a Horizontal shaft type engine. I have another vid that shows the engine I converted with a friends help using a TIG welder for aluminum welding. You can do almost the same thing using JB-Weld, and a file, as I explain in this vid.

  • Two things I doing this to a 12.5 I wane to make a dipper what type of metal and how thick (size to if you know) and how dose jb weld really do in a engine

  • @Mr3wheeledbike

    A 12.5 horse!

Holy liftin, that certainly is a lot larger than this engine!

I don't have any idea of what thickness of metal to use on an engine that large, I personally only used the factory dipper off a 3 horse briggs horizontal engine. I can measure a dipper and let you know, but I sure can't give any guarentees about it!

JB Weld will hold up in an engine, BUT, I don't run these engines for very long, with the exception of the sleeve valve, which I ran on a dyno a lot.

  • @ChargerMiles007 well this is my only engine i can use and it will be put on a go cart so i would say max run time 5 hours maby 1 on average so theirs that also would you leave in the governor/ oil singer in for the governed part.........well you the small engine king so that mesherment and other info would be great

  • @Mr3wheeledbike

Take the crankcase cover off the engine, and take a close look at the bearings etc., thinking of how it will all work with the new arrangement. I see a comment below where someone didn't do many mods, and the engine worked OK. Each design is different though, so I wouldn't bank on that. I will make a vid of the dipper for a 3 horse, I am busy these days, so if I don't put the vid on by Monday, please remind me about it :)

  • I converted a B&S Quantum six or seven years ago without changing anything on the oiling system. I just put a piece of hose on the oil fill and bent it 90° and marked the point where the oil level has to be so that the original slinger gets oil. The engine is still running great. Of course i don`t know what the bearings look like, but i took the head of last year and the cylinder doesn`t look worse than it did before.

  • @1717BY

Thats interesting, glad it worked out so well for you. I only have 1 quantum, and I don't think I have ever taken it apart to look how the bearing oil slots are aligned, perhaps I will have to take a look.

I don't see why not, but you will have to figure out a way to get rid of the existing oil pump, and add a dipper onto the con rod. You would have to look at how the oiling slots are arranged on it. I don't have any of those engines to take a look at :)

  • will this work on a tecumseh

  • @shinyfuzzy

Perhaps a bolt will work, but there can't be anything in the way of the crankshaft bearing when you are done.

  • couldnt u just slam a little bolt in there instead of that nail and jb weld?
