Basically, there's a big difference between good music and good BACKGROUND music.

A lot of music I LOVE to listen to makes horrible background music to talk over. Conversely, a lot of music I wouldn't listen to on its own makes great background music. Here, I show you examples of bad background music, and good background music.

Made to accompany article I wrote for the O'Reilly Digital Media site called "Put Your Photos on TV, Part 1":

  • Debra Jean Dean sure has a nice radio voice. Mabye she could do the "The next station is..." announcements for my local commuter railway :-)

  • What is white and pink noise? Can you give an example?

  • I'm refering to samples that have a "spray" or "wind" sound as a component. A lot of industrial music (think Nine Inch Nails) use a lot of noise in their percussion.

It's all explained in detail in the accompanying O'Reilly article (link in the "about this video" over on the top right of this page). The section on music starts at the bottom of page two and goes onto page three.

  • Haha, you're not going to like my Sketchies entry then. I break the background music rule you keep banging into my head. But it works.

    Awesome tutorial.

  • Ok, I got it...thanks! I've been using some of Kevin MacLeod's music from incompetech dot com. He licenses it through Creative Commons. It's free, but you can also make donations.

  • You're hilarious! We want more Beef People (just kidding).

  • Good tips.
