The Explore team takes you to the site of the Three Gorges Dam before it was completed and became the largest hydroelectric dam in the world - more than five times the size of the Hoover Dam. The dam's five-step system of locks raise and lower ships by as much as 371 feet, and 25 massive turbines power a city four times the size of Los Angeles. Distributed by TubeMogul.

Yeah, you're right. A project that has taken 40,000 people 20 years to build, total cost now exceeding 100 billion dollars, employed engineers and consultants from all around the world... The dam probably won't last even2 years.

That's if you trust Chinese construction to last that long. I wouldn't want to live anywhere near it. They cut corners and do so much dodgy things that who knows what is wrong with it and when it will fail.

The largest hidroelectric dam is ITAIPÚ where Brazil and Paraguay meetand still will be for many decades. While Three Gorges dam is phisically larger, it will never have the water flux to reach the megawatts that Itaipú generates. Besides, because of local geological considerations, Three Gorges will have a short useful life of only about 30 years due to high rates of sedimentation.
