From http://www.clickablemaps.com - How to make a clickable map of the USA for your website or blog - part 1.

A 3 part series detailing the process of making a clickable image map for your website or blog.

In my example I am making a clickable map of the USA and will be adding it to a Wordpress Blog as a post. I will be using a range of software, like Corel Paint Shop Pro, Mapedit, and Dreamweaver. Making a clickable map for the web is not quick and easy, great care needs to be taken, this tutorial gives an insight of how I make clickable maps, the final product will be available for download at my website www.clickablemaps.com

  • is it possible to create a image map that is vector based (illustrator/inkscape) rather than raster based (gimp/photoshop)?

No not really because clickable maps are made with fixed coordinates. At least the final image must be a fixed size to match the coordinates, image mapped coordinates are not flexible like vector based images that are used in Flash technology.
