The thing is that typically the money already shows up on your bank account so you think the money is really there. Typically they claim to be from another country and in cases where you selling something that you can send them and is easy for them to sell again (like a laptop) they settle for the product. If it's an old car you can't send it to them and they ain't interested in it, so they pay you too much and ask you to return what they overpaid. And it's always at least like 1000 $ and up.
