Happy Diwali to everyone! Date of Festival: Oct 17, 2009
My father loved Diwali - the ancient Hindu "Festival of Lights" celebrating victory of good over evil. It celebrates the joyous home coming of Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the legend, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows of lamps.
Deepavali is a Sanskrit word - "Deepa" meaning light and "Avali" meaning a row. Therefore, together, they mean "a row of lights" and indeed, illumination forms its main attraction. Diwali, symbolizes that age-old culture of India which teaches us to vanquish ignorance that subdues humanity and to drive away darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge. Deepavali, the festival of lights even in today's modern world, projects India's rich and glorious past and teaches us to uphold the true values of life. (Wikipedia quote)
My father recorded this as a greeting to all his fans when we had Ragmala being broadcast on the old "International TV Channel" almost 15 years ago. Seems like it was just yesterday!
