  • You are welcome!

Yi Kwei Sze is for me a fascinating singer. The Dutch public admired him. I remember he once performed on Dutch television. Until now I did not manage to get recordings of that performance.

I know of the existence of radio interviews with this singer.

Do you know his performance of Songs of the Death composed by Moussorgski?

  • @borlange11

I believe that Yi Kwei Sze and Brooks Smith recorded this song cycle, along with Brahms' Vier Ernste Gesänge; this record had won them the prestigious Grammy Award. I heard Yi Kwei Sze singing the Brahms' piece in live concert once (in 1967; in Taiwan), but I never had the opportunity to hear him singing the Moussorgski piece.

  • I'll soon post here one of the Moussorgski songs.

  • You can feel there was tons of efforts in it

  • I don't feel any efforts ........nor did I SEE any efforts when I saw him singing on the Dutch TV (many years ago).

  • I've heard Yi-Kwei Sze's singing both in German and in Russan. I thinks his diction in both languages is impeccable!

  • Thank you for sharing this one. This relatively short piece is played by two world-class musicians. The performance is simply fantastic. What a gem !!

  • Yi-Kwei Sze (1919-1994), professor of voice at Eastman from 1971 to 1980, studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Shanghai. Mr. Sze taught in China for several years before coming to the United States in 1947 to make his debut at Town Hall in New York City. He gave recitals throughout the world, and performed with major orchestras in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

  • What a pleasure to hear this beautiful voice! His accompanist, too, is one of the best. Thank you so much, and please give us more!

  • Schumann

  • who is the composer? Meyerbeer??

  • I'm sorry if I misled you, what I had in mind was that the singer being an oriental and the song was in German, he needs a lot of efforts in mastering the language
