If, as Ed Balls acknowledges, private schools provide a privileged (i.e. better) education, and if, as he also says, the government will increase funding per pupil in the state sector to match that in the independent sector, why doesn't the government just make all schools independent and give parents the money to spend? We could then do without Ed Balls and his department.
