A unique educational program designed to help the health care sector improve their patient care.
"A dynamic way to discuss the issue of screening for intimate partner violence in our daily practice. It made me more aware of its connection to chronic illness, how pervasive it is, and the variety of manifestations it can present. I've implemented a better system to screen for IPV in my own practice."
-- Dr. William Schirmer, MD, of Martin's Point Health Care

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual assault affect nearly 32 million Americans annually* and the health consequences of trauma over a lifespan are chronic and devastating. The health care sector constitutes the largest and single most underutilized means of prevention and intervention. Yet fewer than 10 percent of primary care physicians routinely screen patients during regular office visits.**
Asking is vital.
Major Medical Breakthrough is a compelling call to action for the health care sector to examine its role in detecting and preventing violence in patients' lives. Two professional actors, a multimedia approach, and the latest research combine to make a difficult topic accessible, respectful, and entertaining. A post-performance panel discussion enables further conversation and an opportunity to explore policy, protocol, and applications.
