How is it possible for a country such as the United Kingdom come to a point in their existence where a law abiding UK citizen reasonably protecting himself & his property, is sent to prison for protecting himself and his property. How is that possible?

A recent case in the UK where a law abiding citizen killed and intruder breaking into his residence while in his residence....The law abiding citizen reasonably believed his life was threatened within his own castle. Not only was he charged with murder, he was sent to prison for murdering a criminal intent on doing him harm in his own castle?????
