Marconi EMI model 706 904. The Oldest television still in service. Since 1937. Yes 1937. This old 5 inch television 405 lines, and combined 3 band radio has been preserved and still working well after 72 years. See it working. This set was purchased just after the trial period between the Marconi EMI system 405 line, and the John Logie Baird Mechanical system 220 lines on alternate weeks.

  • How do you manage to get 625 line broadcasts on a 405 line set? Did you need a standards converter?

  • Hi Sazzy.

Yes it is done with 624 405 converter. Vintage tv has a big following in the uk, and the coverters are professionally produced. I thnk about £150.

    Martin.

  • falty towers in the background, lol

  • Hi Laugh out loud. Yes, Faulty Towers played on a vhs vidio machine into a 405-625 standards converter.

  • It's an awesome set and even more awesome achievement to keep it running for over 70 years...but Iaurdy is correct concerning the date of manufacture. This set did not exist at the time of the EMI vs. Baird trials of 1936-37, it was introduced later. If it had been designed in 1936 then it would have originally been equipped with a standards switch. ALL sets sold during the three month trial DID have the ability to receive either EMI OR Baird. broadcasts.

  • Dear all who have kindly commented on the old set . I have consulted with the owner. and the line speed is adjustable down to below 220 However it does look to have been designed and built in 1937, and it was used to watch the coronation in 1938.

  • Awesome set,1937. Great, there's still time to warn everyone about the impending Holocaust.

    Quick,spread the word.

  • Alright, the short post was a test to be SURE I wasn't blocked before I posted an erudite comment. This old TV starts with the end of a Fawlty Towers episode where Basil Fawlty's latest scheme: attracting upper class customers to his hotel, was just put paid by fate.

All our old TVs are bummed out. The last one quit on me in the middle of an exciting movie. Be comfiorted: I rented a DVD of it the next day and bought a brand new set, and chucked the old one away !

  • Hello

  • I understand that old paper capacitors can short out. Did you check them out if needed?

  • If that TV has a UHF input you can connect a UHF to VHF cable then connect that to a VHF to AV converter to it you can connect a Xbox 360 to that TV...... I wonder how that would look.

  • beautiful. you are so lucky

  • Mi ez?Waczak szálló?

  • @punishedexistence I agree, when i fire up my antique radios i always smell them after they warm up. I know its weird, but it's such a warm comforting smell. Long live analog technologies!
