Nathan at Midas Muffler recommended this procedure. Drill a small hole at the bottom of you muffler to allow water/condensation to drain. This will help prevent premature rusting out of the muffler especially on short trips where the muffler never gets hot enough to evaporate the water content. No, this will not make the muffler louder. No the hole will not get bigger with time. This is a tried & tested for cold climates. Your muffler will last years longer especially up here in Canada where we get freezing temperatures.

I had used the car last night for a short run to my son's house and consequently the muffler didn't get hot enough to boil off the water vapour ( part of the engine exhaust emissions). This morning I drilled the hole and sure enough there was still half a cup of water inside the muffler from last night's trip. Over the years (and especially in the winter) this will destroy the muffler prematurely.

Update October 2011 ( 2 years since making this video). I'm still using the same (original) muffler on the car - a 1997 Toyota Camry LE (great car IMO).
