I discovered these tiny critters milling about a small patch of forest floor. As you can see, they all sport powdered wigs on their rear-sides. Would someone please identify these
[Edit: I've ID'ed these as Beech Blight Aphids]
Bonus critter footage includes a neat green insect that also wants identification (2:28) and Big Ant vs Little Ant death match. (4:33)

Neat what you can find on the dirt, eh?

  • They're Woolly Beech Aphids they feed by sucking the sap out of plants.

They'll leave that white stuff on Roses and other plants then after it rains the white stuff can cause or allow the germination of Sooty Mold which is bad for plants. The second bug is a Green Zelus Assassin Bug it's predatory and was probably feeding on the Aphids. Assassin Bugs are good to have in your garden they protect plants so well that some farmers will buy them for their crops.

  • @cbottle thanks for the information!
