Alternative lifestyles hadnt quite come into mainstream fashion during the Eisenhower era of conformity. In New York City, Murray Burns, a willfully unemployed writer for childrens television, and Nick, his wise-cracking 12-year-old nephew, enjoy a rather unconventional home-life. But made-up holidays, playing hooky at the movies and lamps that are illuminating in more ways than one are no match for Child Welfare and The Man. When they become a case file, will Murray abandon his eccentric lifestyle in order to hold on to the one person who actually means something to him? Self-Sacrifice: the perk of adulthood nobody warns you about.
