The mid 1980's witnessed the florescence of the Hopkins garage/novelty band, "the New Crusty Nostrils, featuring the Fabulous and Exotic Naselles."
Composed mainly of Hopkins grad students and faculty from DoGEE (Geography and Environmental Engineering) and Applied Math & Statistics departments, the band was known for its random costume choices, non-judgmental recruitment of backup singers (Naselles), and eclectic repertoire (blues, rock, punk, glitter). Jared Cohon, then a professor in DoGEE and now President of Carnegie Mellon University, played drums; Dan Naiman, Chairman of JHU's Applied Math & Stats, sax; Joan Stolz, MD Art Institute; and Mary Ellen Porter, JHU Administration. After their last gig in 1990, most of the other band alumni went on to lofty positions in academia and government.
