@partigus I agree wit tying, but sitting out. Gehrig accomplished this record in 14 seasons and ONLY came out of the line up because he was dying otherwise he would still be playing today...lol

I loved this speech in 'The Pride of the Yankees'...but I never realized it was given on the 4th of July. The heart of this country AND of baseball all in one day; what a gift. Thanks Lou.

great book,I'm reading it as it is now.Alot I did not know about Gehrig in there,and the Yanks & Babe also.Gehrigs probably the 2nd greatest player of all time but gets overlooked so constantly.Look at his stats from 27-38,incredible!

Agree about his stats.There's no doubt- he was an absolute BEAST.when Ripkin was chasing the game streak to read about games Gehrig only played a couple of innings in to keep the record going. I mean, come on, that was 70 years time span...my gosh- did they even have tylenol then, let alone cortizone, anti inflamitories, and B12 shots- let alone supplements, speed, and the juice.
As much as I love Ripkin, I always thought the classy thing to do would be to tie the record, then sit out a game.
