In Jack Johnson's case just living at all was the best revenge. This is one of Leadbelly's songs.
That little tenor guitar is my father's Martin, vintage 1942. Cool, huh?
As usual, this is bigger 'n' better if you tack this: &fmt=18 onto the URL above and watch it in stereo and higher-def video.

  • Wherever this appears in the comments, it's a followup to my reply to gtristdan's first posted comment to this video below.

    ...(continued)..

Flattop tenors like this one were used in folk music and Latin dance bands, and were briefly used by the Kingston Trio and other 60s-era folk revival artists in the following generation.

I've thought of selling it, but Hollywood luthier David Neeley tells me to hang onto it, as tenor guitars are making a comeback lately and this thing's value will rise.

  • Everything about the Titanic story is interesting to me, nice addition to my interest. I'll bet Leadbelly played it just like that.

  • Well thanks, but actually not quite. Leadbelly played it in C position (one of the few songs on which he did), which actually comes out to about concert G. I'm doing quite different things, but I hope at least the Leadbelly Spirit is there.

  • That was great Alonzo! Nice production ..

A 1942 Martin aye??! wow....Yes very cool! is there four strings on that Martin?

    Great tune

  • Hi Dan, sorry to take so long getting back to you, my friend. It is indeed a tenor guitar, 4 strings tuned in 5ths like a mandolin (or, more accurately as to pitch, like a mandola).

Archtops with f-holes were used in 20s and 30s-era dance bands in place of banjo---I have one, a Gibson Kalamazoo, which will make an appearance sometime this fall in a video. (continued next post)
