While we were in Haiti, we met a baby girl who was very sick at an orphanage. She was severely malnourished, and appeared near death. We arranged for a doctor to treat her.. and she got better.
Monday, the doctor got a call from the orphanage - the baby (who is now 3 months old) is very sick again. The doctor returned to the orphanage and discovered the baby now has Malaria and possibly a bone marrow disease.
He tried to take her to General Hospital in Port-au-Prince where the US Military is helping... Treatment is free... But they turned her away. The hospital said she wasn't sick enough - and they were overwhelmed with orthopedic patients. The doctor says he really didn't want to take the baby there anyway because the place is filthy - and people are going to the bathroom in buckets right next to their hospital beds. The children's ward is disgusting.
The doctor found a private clinic to treat her. He says the clinic is the only place in Port-au-Prince with an MRI machine. The doctor paid about $3,000 US dollars from his own pocket to get the baby treated at the private clinic. But, she needs more tests and medicine and the doctor is out of money.
LA-based Relief agency www.can-do.org is raising $600 needed for her immediate medical needs. We will send the money through Western Union.
This doctor is a Haitian man - who had been living in Florida, working at a US hospital before the quake. A week before the earthquake, He had returned to his homeland to open a medical clinic in Port-au-Prince... After the earthquake, he spent all the money he was going to use to open his clinic, treating quake victims for free. He is now out of money - but has fallen in love with this orphan baby.
We have now learned that shortly after the quake, the baby's Mother left her on the ground in front of the orphanage... and ran away. The orphanage hasn't even named her yet. The doctor has been calling her Miracle.
Now - for the BEST part......
The doctor is 38 years old, and has a Haitian-American girlfriend in Florida. They have decided to get married, so they can ADOPT the baby!!! (Haitian law requires a man to be married to adopt). The girlfriend is going to come to Haiti within a few weeks. They're going to the Justice of the Peace - so they can do this quickly. The dr. says they'll have a church ceremony later, in the U.S.
The doctor is paying a nurse to stay at the clinic overnight with the baby. This nurse had no job, because the doctor she worked with died in the quake. The doctor is negotiating with the orphanage to see if they will let him unofficially keep the baby until they can legally adopt her. He is thinking about contacting a judge to take legal custody of the baby, on the grounds that the orphanage can't properly care for her.. but, he doesn't want to get the orphanage in trouble. (The orphanage appeared to be one of the BETTER ones in Haiti).
Apparently, because she is a newborn, and He is Haitian, they might be able to fast track the adoption.. get it done within 2 months...because they will all be living in Haiti.
The doctor was adopted himself - and is a total sweetheart.
We are so honored to have been part of connecting him with his future daughter. It's funny how these things work. Amazing Grace. He believes she may have died without intervention - especially this week with the onset of Malaria.
Another update: The two little boys we took off the street are now living in a House in Haiti - and an immigration attorney is working on getting them to their father in Utah.
