Varshavianka~Warszawianka~Варшавянка. INFO: Warszawianka is a Polish song that is believed to have been written in 1879. Wacław Święcicki wrote the song while serving a sentence in the Tenth Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel for socialist activity. The song received its name during a May Day demonstration in 1905, when it became the hymn of the demonstrating workers. The composer of the music is unknown.
Its Russian version with altered lyrics, the Varshavianka, once experienced considerable popularity. It served as a name for 1953 film Hostile Whirlwinds. Gleb Krzhizhanovsky is usually reported as the author of the Russian version and the moment of writing the text is thought to be 1897, when Krzhizhanovsky was imprisoned.
The Spanish song To The Barricades is set to the same music. In East Germany, a German translation was created and used as a common piece of marching music by the Army. An English version with altered lyrics was created by Paul Robeson, but never achieved great popularity.
PLEASE NOTE:
Another song is.....Warszawianka 1831 roku, La Varsovienne (The Song of Warsaw 1831) written by Casimir François Delavigne, music by Karol Kurpiński. The song was written in support of the November Uprising of 1830-1831. The French poet Casimir Delavigne was fascinated and inspired by the news of the uprising making its way to Paris and wrote the words, which were translated into Polish by the historian, journalist, and poet Karol Sienkiewicz (great uncle of Henryk Sienkiewicz). The song is sometimes confused with the later (1905) Polish revolutionary song of the same name (Warszawianka 1905 roku), which had its music used for the 1936 Spanish Anarchist song "To the Barricades".
