  • @predoje: It is from a tv broadcast recorded about 25 years ago.

  • i would NEVER want to criticize ANYTHING Pete ever plays because he is my favorite pianist, but honestly i didnt feel his take on round midnight. first, NO ONE plays Monk tunes as well as Monk himself, but i think Pete is missing the raw nature of the changes here...listen to 7notemode play the tune and you'll see what i mean

  • i agree with everything he said except the technique part. No one can play the way he does. He broke down the jazz and music fundamentals and played his own technique. That combined with his compositions like Oscar said make Monk one of the most unique musical voices of all time.

  • OP was great and his opinion is his opinion and his interpretation is his interpretation and I have the greatest respect for both.. in fact I just lose myself in complete joy and admiration at this music.. I can't get enough of it, and I can listen to Monk for hours in a different mood but not less reverent

  • What a difference with the soul of Monk !

But Peterson is a great piano player.

    A lot of thanks

  • I like how Peterson interpretes Tin Tin Deo and so on, but this sounds too baroque to be Monk's composition

  • @jovesheerwater You can choose not to like this interpretation, that's your opinion. I just don't see your reasoning for why you think the way you do. Your rhetoric seems to be about the form of the song. You've got to understand that this is improv, he can do whatever he pleases. I've already addressed the reasons why you don't like it, and your opinions weren't educated. So if you just want to judge your opinion is invalid.

  • @Xitlalic Bull Crap.

  • @Xitlalic right on !

  • @jovesheerwater What are you talking about? At 2:57 he may not arpeggiate as well as he could have but why does that matter? At 4:00 he just repeats a idea over different changes, that doesn't make it wrong. To say that anything is wrong while improvising is quite a judgment. Things can sound interesting, but that should not give you any reason to believe you can question O.P in such a way. This is him performing the song in a way only he could, just as Monk played the only way he could.

  • Wow such a nice sound flowing and lyrical way of playing! I love it.

  • baritone you said you'd never criticize, so of course you did. so many esoteric comments. easiest arrogant thing to do. anyway, Oscar couldn't help himself, lol. he had to do his digital dexterity version. lol.

  • .....composer. Watching Monk play makes me cringe. He's what I would tell a student not to imitate in terms of dexterity. But, he is a genius nonetheless. But is very accurate in his assessment.
