This 3D heart animation shows a coronary artery angioplasty surgery, also called a percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI, to correct a blocked artery in the heart. It begins by showing the buildup of plaque in an artery wall of the heart, blocking the flow of blood. Afterwards, the patient lies on a testing table while contrast dye is injected into the arteries of the heart, showing the location of the blockage. A guide wire is then moved through the lumen of the blood vessel, followed by a balloon and stent mechanism. The balloon inflates, putting the metal stent in place, so that the lumen of the artery is open and the red blood cells can flow freely. ANCE00178

  • Thank you for sharing this GREAT NEWS! We hope your comments inspire more people to choose a career in medicine!

  • I do this procedure at least twice a week, and we see tremendous positive outcomes! Even after this life saving procedures, clients are still at a vulnerable state for a sudden life threatening arrhythmia which may re-aggravate tissue perfusion the myocardium. There should be a definite life style alteration in this client to prevent future reoccurrence

  • Thank you for sharing this excellent advice!

  • I had this done less than 2 weeks ago. Totally saved my life and besides the normal weakness after a heart attack, I feel great. My LAD was 99.9% occluded. I nearly bought the farm. So happy to be here! =) Modern medicine is great!

  • That is EXCELLENT NEWS! So glad you received treatment in time. As a heart attack survivor, what advice do you have for others about warning signs, seeking treatment, etc.?

  • My dad had a heart attack on Saturday, being the stubborn bugger, he dismissed it as a pulled muscle, came to my gig, thought everything was fine, went to work yesterday morning had a major heart attack, died four times, thankfully they managed to save his life due to this procedure, thank you for sharing the video!

  • i hope it went well

  • my dad will go through this tommorow.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this. My husband is having this procedure done tomorrow and is extremely nervous because he does not know what to expect. I am going to have him watch this as well and hopefully this will ease his fears some.

  • my grandma had this done

  • Wow very interesting my step-dad has to get that done tomorrow nervous for him

  • I fell over Monday afternoon 3-5-12 while playing dominoes. worst pain I think Ive ever been in. Right Coronar ateriy was clogged and had basically collapsed. They put in 2 stints, and Im home Wensday afternoon. Amazing! I gotta go back and get the left side done in about 3 weeks, 70% blockage on that side. Saved my life i damn near died monday, 52 years old never had a health problem in my life, and Ive always been thin, you just never know

  • The stent is a great idea! I can't help but think that adding to the structural integrity of the plaque is a better idea than only "crushing" it against the vessel wall. Very nice video.

  • My dad had a heart attack this morning. He prbly wouldn't be alive right now if he hadn't of had this procdure done when he did. i thank god we didin't lose him
