Welcome to the fifth part of my twelfth PEMNAS Playthrough series! This September's featured game, from yours truly, the most underrated title in the Sonic franchise. What you'll be seeing me play is the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies Island. In HD outputted video and with ANNOTATED COMMENTARY! On my last PEMNAS series, which was about the N64 version of Resident Evil 2, I did quite a lot of exhaustive annotated commentary. This time I'm gonna kinda do the same but not talk so much here. Not the spoken kind of commentary (thank god for us all), but annotated commentary that will consist of nerd trivia, jokes, personal reflection on certain parts, pointing out oddities, opinions, and more! Stay tuned!
About the game:
The Sega Saturn version includes some exclusive features not available in the original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version. *One is the completely redone Special Stages that are in fully polygon-rendered 3D (in the old-sense), and are reminiscent of Sonic 2's half-pipe Special Stages. These SS are considered some of the best stages in the Sonic series. *Also featured in the Sega Saturn release is the new red-book soundtrack by Richard Jacques, who would later do music for Sonic R, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Chronicles, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Blood Stone 007. *Last bit to point out is the enhancements the game's graphics got over the original 16-bit version. Sonic's animations are smoother and seemingly has more frames of animation thanks to the Saturn's specialty in 2D sprites, and the stages themselves sport much more details in them for cosmetics. Other thing is that this Saturn port took about seven weeks to four months to complete.
This game was and still is, in my personal opinion, a competent and decent Sonic title in the series. While there will ***inevitably*** be people disagreeing with me on that for a variety of reasons, of which I don't care for in particular, I really think this game is great for what it is and I'm quite happy to have played it, and on an actual Sega Saturn NTSC console too. Really, if you honestly think this game sucks, let me remind you that you can go far beyond worse in the Sonic series nowadays (I'm looking at Genesis GBA, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Labyrinth, and according to many people, Sonic 2006).
Now for story. In Sonic 3D, Sonic takes a visit to Flicky Island, where birds of many colors roam on. Unfortunately, upon his arrival, he finds robots taking over the island with the little feathery dudes encapsulated inside them. The one responsible for these fiendish acts are, expectantly, Dr. Eggman. Now it's up to Sonic to break his eggs, and restore peace to the island.
Hope you enjoy. =) Also, PEMNAS stands for "PLEASE EXCUSE MY NOOB ASS SKILLS". I invented the term myself.
love this game. i never had a chance to play the saturn version. sonic team did put alot of effort into this, something this generations sonic team dont do. they need to come back to these roots. sonic racing for xbox they had the special stage look in one of the tracks . imagine that as a special stage for sonic 4. ....but yeah thanks for upload
