For a thousand years, the people of China have been using cormorants to help them fish in their many lakes and rivers. Zong Man is considered to be the best fisherman of the Lijiang River, still using the same technique as his ancient ancestors. He has a most remarkable relationship with his 12 birds, who understand his voice and gestures. These expert creatures dive to amazing depths to catch many pounds of fish every day, usually the biggest fish in the river. Zong Man reveals the secrets of his unusual trade. Written, directed and produced by Frederic Fougea.

This is part of the "Lord of the Animals" series, which presents amazing stories of human and animal coexistence from around the world. Discover the warm and trusting relationships and the ancient traditions, passed down through generations, that have permanently linked humans to animals of nearly every description. Produced by Boréales Productions. 26 minutes, color.

  • @blunklaura Look up the NYtimes article "In China, Pollution Worsens Despite New Efforts". Also, China has a horrible reputation of its treatment of animals both domesticated and wild. Laura, you are obviously disillusioned with the mystique of the Chinese culture because while the United States has its environmental issues, we are light years ahead of China when it comes to the preservation of our natural environment.

  • It's very sad that Americans have raped their land so much that most all native animals have been driven to live to accomodate us,and we don't try to understand them---well,most don't--we use them for sport.

The Chinese has a culture as old as dirt (literally...) and have not raped their land and their streams such as we Americans have, and they produce such beautiful things...stories....songs,their folk music, and their ability to communicate so closely with animals.

    It's a damned shame.
