UP 844 has finally reached it's destination in 32 days! Traveling from Wyoming and crossing 4 states to arrive in California. It took the locomotive about ten minutes to arrive when I got to the crossing, so we made it just in time! I must say, this is the most collosal steam locomotive I've ever seen in my point of view!

Built in 1944, UP 844 was originally used as a passenger service train. A few years later, it was then assigned to work for freight service. After sixteen years, in 1960, UP 844 was saved from the scrapper's torch, and put back in service. It's the last known steam locomotive of it's own kind that's still in service today, and continues on pulling freight, passengers, and continuing tours across America.

Fun Fact:
Since it's so expensive to run and power a steam locomotive this big, they HAD to bring passengers along!

  • Time to buy a tripod!

  • @robertgift I've got one, it just wasn't used in this video.

  • Was the 844 under its own power?I heard it began having boiler issues on its way n2 Stockton...

  • It did. A few times on the way. Luckily there was a backup engine to help the locomotive reach it's destination.

  • 844 isn't the last know steam engine in service. Its the last of it's kind, there still is 3985, 4449, 3751, etc.

  • Oh, thanks! ;)

  • @TheARChronicles No idea when in CA again. Will be in Denver on July 21st to 24th for Cheyene Frontier Days.

    Go to wwwdotupdotcom/aboutup/special_trains/steam/details.shtml

  • @robertgift yes 844 was converted to oil, and yea i think it would weigh that, not sure tho. i still haven't gotten to see 844 in person yet, do you know when it's next trip to Cali is?

  • @Drewster327 also theres nw 1218 milw 261 nkp 765 and a few others

  • @TheARChronicles Yes, the many wheels are to distribute the weight of the tender evenly over the track.

But would it weigh more than a half a tank car carrying water and half a tank car carrying oil?

A tank car has two-wheeled trucks.

Was 844 originally coal and converted to oil?

    Thank you.

  • @robertgift 844 uses oil and not coal, and the many wheels are probably for the wheight of the tender.

  • @Drewster327 yes, but unlike the others 844 has always been in service, it has never retired

  • @ROADTRAIN23 What were the boiler issues? Why so many wheels under the tender? Was it that heavy carrying coal and water?

Nice close-ups which I missed seeing earlier.

Too bad it did not pull forward enough to clear that crossing.

Don'they communicate with people athe back of the shortrain?
