This footage appears elsewhere on youtube but this is a good quality copy. It shows "Django Reinhardt et son Orchestra" at Bal Tabarin in 1944.

Django appears just after the sequence showing Marlene Dietrich at 1.50. The speed of his fingers and his vibrato are amazing. At the start of the clip, Gerard Leveque and Joseph Reinhardt can be seen in the background on stage.

The background music does not appear on record anywhere and was almost certainly recorded at the gig. The tunes are "Night & Day", "Shorty George" and the opening sequence to "I Can't Give You Anything But Love".

The voice that can be heard on a couple of occasions sounds very much like Charles Delaunay.

  • I've just noticed that the woman dancer at 2.10 hides her face from the camera with a hanky. Understandable wartime paranoia or something else? We must be told.

  • I have the details and will be emailing them to you directly.

  • Why aren't the crowd staring in awe at Django? :-)

  • And what about the lukewarm applause?

  • It's so nice to see that people could dance together and were not segregated by race as would have been the case in the U.S. at that time. There even seems to be a gay male couple being able to enjoy a dance. Europe has helped loosen up the U.S. from our Puritan influence and I say thanks!

  • This is kind of strange video for 1944 I feel. I don't very often see such candid impromptu clips with such good sound. It kind of has that modern feel where Joe Shmo just took out his camera and started shooting at some event. Only it's 1944.

  • Well quite. Seriously though it's good to see a good quality version, it's always fascinating to watch django play.
