This is my Raw, unedited footage of Columbus Circle and Central Park at about 11am on Sept 11 2001. It goes from chaos to peaceful and green.
At first when the terrorist attacks were happening, my first instinct wasn't to run, it was to go to work. I didn't see the buildings fall on TV in dramatic fashion. Instead I was in the subway trying to catch a train, but it wasn't running, so they gave us all this block ticket. Then I hopped a bus and made it as far as Columbus Circle. Traffic was jammed. But New Yorkers weren't panicing, as you can see from my footage. As i got off the bus, I could see nothing but a steady stream of people walking uptown, away from downtown. We were all talking to each other. Strangers talking to strangers like normal human beings. And we were all talking about the same thing. I then made my way to Central Park, I wanted to see if I could see the smoke and I did.
Central Park was a surreal sight. Like a Salvador Dali painting. Peaceful, sunny and warm. People lounging in the shade as they always do. Except there was a great big death plume of smoke emitting in the horizan. Very jarring. Anyways, after that I bumped into some people I knew on the upper west side and we had lunch, happy to see each other and to be living through this together. I never made it to work that day.
