(continued) I'm not so interested in a theological debate (not here, but I'd be happy w/email), but I'd be remiss if I didn't say that your experience a local level doesn't represent the richness and beauty that is the Catholic Church. "Salvation comes from God alone, but because we receive the life of faith through the Church, she is our mother. We believe the Church as the mother of our new birth, and not 'in' the Church as if she were the author of salvation." (from the Catechism, 169)

Dear thrufaithalone,
Honestly, your story breaks my heart. It's not the first time I've heard of a Catholic who never heard of the message of Christ's salvation in the Church, and had to find it through another Christian. As a Catholic who is passionate about sharing the Good News of Jesus, your experience of the practice and teachings of the Church on a local level saddens me.
