@theresnosiknamesleft You're right about his scale and how meticulous he was -- his sketches were not sketches, but math equations. He often hid mathematical ratios in his paintings, such as Abraham - the zip is exactly half the width of the left side of the painting, for a ratio of 2:1:3.
@hallstromfineart Newman was meticulous about the scale of his zips/negative space relative to each other. When he says scale I am pretty sure he means the scale of each part of the piece in respect to the shape and size of the canvas.
Interestingly, when you listen to Newman speaking and the listen to Phili Guston's voice, they have almost the same voice...I guess it is the voice of genius...
artists simply do not put this kind of deep thinking into their works anymore. it is all gimmicky shit. there is no soul. thank you so much for uploading!
