What's the software like in the package?
I am thinking of switching from Canon to Sony, and Canon has some pretty solid editing tools etc, which saves me a lot of money.

Now that I have had some time with the A550 and ACR works....I have to say that I am happy with the camera. It is a good replacement for my A100 however I still see it as an in between camera until the replacement for the A700 or equivalent with video. Saying that I have never used a kit lense on this body and I have a medium level of glass.
There are some features that only work in JPEG mode which sucks.
The built in tele-converter works great with my 70-300G.

The majortiy of the time I shoot in RAW, and use Photoshop/Lightroom. Since I bought this camera before most stores had them in stock, ACR did not support the new Sony Raw. I was forced to use Sony's software and was not happy with the results. I am not saying that Sony's software is crap, what I'm saying is I'm not exprerienced with it and was unable to get the results I wanted. I choose not to dig into it since I knew ACR would be updated. During that time I shot Raw + JPEG.

The noise level is better then the A100 and A700, It is pretty clean upto ISO 800, 1600 is not bad and usable depending on the size. 3200 is not horrible but above that is only good for memories. AF is okay, not really leaning one way or the other.

I have shot with the A100 for 3 years now. The A550 is smaller and weaker build. The menus are clearly for newbie but you can turn off the help menus. I haven't truely tested it but the ISO upto 1600 is a big improvement over all the models. I have no reason not to recommend it yet however if the A850 had better ISO I would have gone that route. I bought it at G&G Electronics in Toronto, Ont. Canada for $890+tax They are a good small store and no I don't work for them.
