Michael Ignatieff responds to seal hunt protesters in Nanaimo, BC

Michael Ignatieff kicked off his national tour in Nanaimo BC only to be met with a group of seal hunt protesters. The seal hunt demonstrators surrounded the cafe where the event was being held and chanted MURDERER LEAVE TOWN SEAL KILLER LEAVE TOWN, MICHAEL IGNATIEFF GO HOME LEAVE THE HARP SEALS ALONE, and BLOOD ON THE ICE BLOOD IN THE WATER PROFITING OFF THE SEAL SLAUGTER. The protest was so loud that all doors to the cafe had to be closed and EVERYONE inside was taking notice. Because Ignatieff was having trouble speaking inside with all the noise outside, he agreed to come speak to protesters after he was done IF they stopped chanting. This is what he had to say.

The seal hunt has been going on for generations and generations and the seal population has never been endangered. In fact, it keeps on rising. And then here come along some people from the suburbs who have no idea what is happening. They haven't talked to any of the sealers before, yet call them barbarians and other horrible names. They see these pictures with all the blood and the cute seals and think they have the only valid point of view out there.

if everyone wants an end to the commercial seal hunt than i guess everyone would also want and end to the chicken and beef and all other commercial farming industries as well right??? why pick the seal to save because there're cute?

If he wants to "bring Canadians together" he'll respect the wishes of the overwhelming majority of Canadians and support an end to the commercial seal hunt and the implementation of viable alternatives such as a licence buyout.

Their way of life is dependent on hunting the seal? Huh? It's seasonal part-time work subsidized by the government.

Some of them are aboriginal, some aren't. The COMMERCIAL seal hunt is not a native hunt.
