@midlander4 You are certainly correct. The first few seconds are the pure, original theme and then it is a sample, etc.

Help me out, people - this isn't the "original" theme, is it? This is the 80's Radiophonic Workshop makeover (which I love, by the way), with sampled human voices... probably a Fairlight, Emulator or whatever pricey keyboard the BBC was using at the time. Sorry to be pedantic about a fantastic clip, but this definitely isn't "original", any more than Matt Smith is the "original" Dr Who.
Info above talks about 1964 as the first transmission date - they certainly weren't sampling in those days.

@midlander4 hi there and many thanks for your comment, actually i think it is the original score - or at least the one they were using for the show in the early 1970s.....anyway it was certainly the easiest one i could find for this wonderful much missed show

Thanks for posting this. Pity it's never been released on any of the BBC theme tune CD's.

@davidleigh65 It is indeed a stand out theme.. I'm going to give it a go at a cover version and I'll post it up. But better to hear the original:-) And thank you for the composers name, duh! I should have known, I've watched I Clavdivs so many times and never caught his credit. Shame.
