Nogales which means walnut in Spanish was officially founded in 1882 along a north-south rail line to promote trade between the United States and Mexico. Where today commercial, religious and cultural ties are strong between the sister cities known as Ambos Nogales. The city is in a mountainous setting at an elevation of 3,865 feet and it serves as both the economic capital and the county seat of Santa Cruz County, the smallest and southernmost of Arizona's counties.
