Someone from my high school did a masters degree seminar about the cyclones, aftermath, and all - and gave a copy to the school. As a library aide - I read the book- and nearly 70 years to the day I happened to do so by coincidence. Living so near and having been there - [and now we have cyclone warnings all about us] its a sobering song. I met Miss Janette Carter at an event many years ago - such a dear lady..

My grandmother used to tell me about the tornado that hit the Rye Cove school in 1929. She grew up on the hill in front of where Ruth Hill's store used to be and had to walk to school. She didn't go to school that day and could remember the storm vividly. She said that the storm turned everything to mud which made it that much harder to get the injured to the railroad out across the Clinch River between Slant and Clinchport.

I'm not quite sure if I like this one or Doc Watson's version better. They are both just wonderful, but there's something about this song in particular that just pulls me in.

I wish Gary Cooper could have played A.P in a movie version of the Carter Family saga.

Heart breaking. I discovered bluegrass when I was 19, and the Carter family maybe a year later. They are one of my favorite bands ever. Their harmony is so natural and heartfelt, I really think it can't be beat.

Hi there, I totally agree with you, the Carter Family is one of the best ever. I think what gives this song it's power is just the simplicity and truthfulness of the story it tells. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Check out the other videos on my channel, I have over 400 videos dating from the 20's and 30's all performed in the old time style of playing. Check it out if you have time. Thanks again for watching and have a great day, Brian

The Carter Family is without a doubt a national treasure. I am lucky to live in Scott County, VA. I have been able to visit the Carter Fold as well as AP's grave to pay my respects.
