DOCUMENTARY SERIES BRILLIANT MINDS BY CEDECOM - POLITICS

Will people of different countries, cultures or ideologies be capable of living together without a higher control? In this documentary, Daniel Pipes, an expert on the Middle East, believes countries must exert greater control. His view is based on the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, the threat posed by an increasing Arab population in Europe to the customs and democratic values of the West and the existence of active terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda. Rahaf Harfoush, the creator of Obama's online campaign, underlines the importance of social networks, going so far as to claim that they have changed the way we do politics. Vandana Shiva, an Indian human rights activist and scientist, fights on behalf of the poorest societies on our planet, and she warns us that the war for control of water, economic globalisation, systems of production and multinational companies that control food production are all obstacles to overcoming world poverty. Will China be capable of opening itself to the West and accepting universal values? The insistence of the Chinese Communist Party's ideologist, Wang Xiaoping, on the effort her country is making to open itself up to these Western values, clashes head-on with the philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, who is much more critical of the situation in China. The Chemistry Nobel prize-winner Mario Molina warns us about the involvement of society in confronting such problems as climate change. These are some of the contents of the second of the three documentaries.
