SALAM - LSE ISoc Discover Islam Week 2007 Launch Event (Part 2)

130 Students, 1 Amazing Symbol of Peace

A strikingly unique event, something never attempted before; 130 LSE students, of all backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, societies and interests, came together to spell out the word SALAM (meaning 'peace' in Arabic) outside the LSE Library. The moment was captured by a photographer from an aerial view, symbolizing the hopeful and innovative spirit of today's Muslim youth and their fellow students.

Representatives from the major political parties, LSE Director Howard Davies, Head of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari and LSE Student Union representatives each gave a small speech on the importance of such an event.

The LSE SU Islamic Society (ISoc) welcomed everyone and showed how they were are a diverse group of young Muslim students with a potential to contribute to this society and enrich it. Alhamdulillah (All praise is to God) everyone enjoyed an afternoon of refreshments and dialogue with ISocers on our outreach stall, where free take-home literature was provided too.

The whole launch event was filmed by LooSE TV (LSE's Student Union TV network), and the bird's eye picture of the SALAM formation was distributed through press releases to local and national media. It hit outlets such The Beaver (LSE's Student Union newspaper), the front page of The Muslim News, Operation Black Vote web pages, the LSE press office, and some of the launch speaker's web pages. With the grace of God, the LSE Student Union awarded us the "Best Society Event of Year 2006-2007 Award"
