Joining is a crucial part of The Son-Rise Program. Instead of stopping a child's repetitive behaviors, as in ABA, parents join in these behaviors. INTERESTING FACT: The actor representing The Son-Rise Program in this video, also the script writer, is fully recovered from severe Autism himself.
The idea is that children with autism are performing their behaviors for reasons that are important to them (and, as an increasing body of research shows, these behaviors often serve a physiological purpose, as well). When parents show interest in what their children are doing, they establish a powerful bond. In response, children begin to display a genuine interest. Once a child is willingly engaged, the door is open to help that child to learn and grow.
The Autism Treatment Center of America™ is home to The Son-Rise Program® , a powerful, effective and totally unique treatment for children and adults challenged by Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger's Syndrome , and other developmental difficulties. Our team of committed teachers represents over 100 years of real life experience working with children using The Son-Rise Program. Over the last 35+ years, we have worked with more than 25,000 parents and professionals from around the world, teaching them this unique system of treatment and education.
We believe that every child has unlimited potential. For some of The Son-Rise Program participants, this means their child returns to mainstream school or completely recovers from Autism. For other families, this means improvements in their child's development, social skills, communication, skill acquisition and quality of life far beyond what most would have ever predicted.
The Son-Rise Program® focuses on respect and deep caring as the most important factors impacting a child's motivation to learn, and from the beginning has made love and acceptance a meaningful part of every teaching process. In The Son-Rise Program, the children show us the way in to their world, and then we show them the way out to ours.

You're not giving up on your child.
Neither are we.
Many bloggers vent or speak rudely: all I want to say, is that I have autism. ...And don't freak out, because it is not a curse; it just looks a little funny in the beginning. Eventually things settle down once we find a centre; it is a blessing, the source of rich insight; and not as painful as it seems.
It requires much patience, for little thanks; but don't feel 'disappointed'. NO autistic person would swap, and be NT; we love the experience!!
We don't need to be cured! Just understood.

"Hi I'm ABA, I have decades of scientific research to back up my methods and tons of empirical evidence to show that I work, what about you?". "Oh.. well I have a leather jacket? that makes me cool doesn't it? Like the guy from the mac ads? except with less hair.."

Because showing a proven methodology as being practised by easily confused nerds and a completely unproven methodology as being practised by the cool kids in leather jackets is productive.

Relating and engaging with people is what works in the current world.
I can not think of one instance where ABA is right for any one except lazy people who do not have time to challenge themselves to engage and reach out to relate with a person.
ABA practices make it easy for schools. Once the kids are adults and out, where are the pecs for REAL LIFE and LIVING WITH REAL SITUATIONS.
More over does any one really know what Dr. Ivar Lovaas discipline was? You'd be Surprised!

This approach may work for one autistic child and not another. All are different. Just go with what works for your autistic child. If Son Rise is it, right on. do it. If not, move on and find another thing. Just never give up. I like the fact Son Rise is positive and encouraging. We can all use more of that.
