Coonhound

"A Coonhound is a type of scent hound and a member of the hound group.

Coonhounds are an American style of hunting dog developed for the unique quarry and working conditions found in the United States.

In the colonial period, foxhounds were imported for the popular sport of foxhunting. Various breeds of foxhounds and other hunting hounds were imported from England, Ireland, and France, making up the initial composition of the dogs that were later known as Virginia Hounds.

Foxhounds were found to be inadequate for hunting animals that didn't "go to ground", but instead took to the treetops to escape, such as raccoons, opossums, bobcats and even larger prey like cougars and bears. The dogs were often confused or unable to hold the scent when this occurred, and would mill about.

Treeing dogs were developed, chosen for a keen sense of smell, the ability to track, chase and corner any manner of animal independent of human commands, and, most importantly, to follow an animal both on the ground and when it takes to the trees. A good coonhound will bark and keep its prey treed until the hunters arrive. Bloodhounds specifically were added to many coonhound lines to enhance the ability to track. Some dogs have webbed toes to deal with the rivers and swamps so common in their hunting grounds.

Coonhounds can hunt individually or as a pack. Generally, hunters don't chase their quarry along with the hounds, unlike organized foxhunting, but wait and listen to the distinctive baying to determine if a raccoon or other animal has been treed. Besides raccoons, coonhounds are excellent at handing all manner of prey if trained properly.

Besides hunting, coonhounds are wonderful family dogs that are known to be good with children. They also make good watchdogs with an impressive, loud bark."

  • Didn't see a coon hound one all I saw was prissy show dogs that's a disgrace to coon hunters my dogs r slickd up and look jus as good but the only pic ull see of them is on a tree

  • @mdlondon1951 Ha, at first we had to nudge her into the kennel, but after awhile, we had her trained so that when we said "go to your pen" she'd listen. Part of the trick to kennel training is that it's a time-out device and also supposed to be like the dog's little private den. When the dog isn't in trouble, the door should be left open so that s/he can go in freely. Was the Shitzu off leash when s/he was chasing the cat? Poor kitty probably had no idea what was going on.

  • @awkwardperspective Thanks for the info. Did you have to drag the dog into the kennel & close the door? When I took my hound out of the truck yesterday, she tried to run after my Shitzu who was chasing a cat & ended up dragging me across the lawn until I fell down--I'm glad I didn't let go of the leash! She also barks incessantly at the Shitzu! Must be a hound thing with the barking, can't get her to shut up when she gets started. I feed the my dogs before we eat, so no dilemma there.

  • @mdlondon1951 When she tore things up she went in the kennel, yes, and for barking. She was really bad about barking when we were eating when we first got her; she'd sit there and bark the whole twenty minutes it took us to have a meal. When she was in for tearing things up, though, she was normally in for like, fifteen minutes or so. I'm sure learn your puppy will learn. Most hound breeds that I've known are very enthusiastic to please and tend to pick up on things so long as they are happy.

  • @awkwardperspective She tears up things when I'm gone & when I'm at home!! I like the idea of the crate training. Did you put her in the kennel when she did something bad & how long did you make her stay there? My dog knows when she does something wrong, but can't seem to help herself. I have to remind myself that although she's huge, she is still a puppy &, hopefully, will soon learn & stop being so naughty.

  • @mdlondon1951 We had a redbone until this past fall when she unfortunately passed away and she had separation anxiety. I'm not sure if that is common with hounds but if your dog is tearing up things when you leave, that might be part of the problem. To keep her from destroying things (and there were times that she would shred a box of pop cans and pop them open with her teeth, soup cans, too) we crate trained her.

  • @physicsandpoetry The raccoons in competitions are checked for their health before exposing the dogs to them. Hunting wild raccoons is like hunting any wild animal. Of course there is a risk of disease but not as likely as you might think. Additionally, with coon dogs, the objective usually is to tree the animal, not kill it. The hunter kills the animal.

  • Raccoon dog vs dog. See my channel.
