I vaguely remembered this piece of film. At the time I didn't appreciate it though having seen it again I thought that it was a brilliant piece which deserves high praise! (lol - pun not intended but still quiet funny). Both the script writing and the excellent cast of characters who played there parts superbly deserve full credit including Charlote (RIP) and Geraldine... Many thanks for the post...Well worth the effort..

1:32 OH santa's pissed
Her mum had a real weird accent! As narrow minded as her mum was, you could still see how much she loved her daughter. Brilliant film, definitley did the book justice.

I don't think Jess's mother ever "disliked" her. It was the mother's idea of Jess's "sin" that the mother disliked. I suppose seeing that Jess thrived after being cast out of the family and the church softened her feelings towards Jess. I first saw this when it aired on basic cable. I don't remember the movie being so miserable yet I sensed it was important. At least it ends on a note of hope that Jess will have the life she wants, based on religion or not.
