Birth place means nothing, Jesus was born in Betlehem but the foundation of christianity was jerusalem and every christian regards jerusalem as the most important city. Lumbini has less importance for us Buddhists compared to Bodh gaya because it is in Bodh gaya Buddha attained salvation and enlightenment.
Buddha was only born in Nepal but he became what he is known for today in india.
