1) Epidemiology of disease: PHYSICAL INACTIVITY. Physical activity is associated with lower risk for obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, hypertension, stroke, diabetes mellitus (type II), colon and breast cancer, anxiety, depression, and premature death. Recommendations have been published with guidelines for regular activity levels that bestow health benefits upon individuals. Data from 2005 show only 49.1% of US adults meet CDC/ACSM physical activity recommendations (1). Distribution of prevalence of physical inactivity is as follows: men—49.3%, women—52.1%, 18-24 year olds—40.4%, 65 and older—61%, whites—48.9%, Hispanics—56%, African-Americans—58.2% (1).
2) Target audience: Latino adults
3) Action recommendation:
a. Option 1: Moderate intensity activity, such as walking, 30 minutes a day for 5 days out of the week. Pace should be brisk—enough to elevate the heart rate.
b. Option 2: Vigorous activity, such as jogging, biking, aerobics, sports, 20 minutes a day for 3 days out of the week. Pace should be enough to cause rapid breathing and fast heart rate. Slide: jog, bike, aerobics 20 minutes 3 days a week
