Very rarely performed, hideously difficult piano miniatures. Fragment of:
Gift, Reflexions, Rivers: Milosz Poetry Night In Paris
Literature

Paris, 02.12.2011

The Centre Universitaire de Malesherbes at the Paris-Sorbonne University hosts a night dedicated to Czesław Miłosz. A special reading of poems by French artists accompanied by a piano performance and film, followed by the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the 1980 Nobel prize laureate and his poetry, illustrated by commentaries of his peers and includes rare photographs

The programme starts with "Don, Reflets, Rivières..." / "Gift, Reflexions, Rivers...", a multimedia event combining a poetry reading, video and piano recital, revolving around the principal themes of the writer's work: the human condition, totalitarianism, exile, the mission of the poet towards the world, and the connection between nature and the city.

The performance features a selection of Miłosz's texts read in French by actors Mélodie Richard and Pierre-François Garel, accompanied by rare compositions of Karol Szymanowski ("Opus 33"), Galina Ustovlskaya ("Sonata n°6") and Morton Feldman ("Triadic Memories") played by Jozef Kapustka, and video pieces by Martin Maugeais and Arthur Coulet. The concept of the event was created by Danièle Chauvin and Mariola Odzimowska.

The film was conceived in a close relationship with the poems selection. The images echo Milosz' poetry as read by the actors. They are also reacting in real-time to the pianist's performance, mirroring the relationship once existing between the musician and the silent movie he used to play along to.

Later that night, the venue inaugurates the exhibition "Czesław Miłosz: Prix Nobel de Littérature 1980"/ "1980 Literature Nobel Prize laureate". Divided into 13 sets, it displays poems translated in French along with photographs, the writer's biography and commentary of his peers about the legacy of his work.

The curator of the exhibition, Jolanta Pol from the Museum of Literature in Warsaw, selected rare photographs of Miłosz taken by Maciej Billewicz in 1981, during the writer's first visit in Poland after 30 years of exile. The artist documented the whole trip, following Miłosz to official appearances, as well as more intimate meetings with family and friends. In parallel to the selection of photographs illustrating the writer's comeback to his motherland on both public and private sides, the set presents notes by Josif Brodsky, Seamus Heaney, Tomas Venclova and Witold Gombrowicz. His friends and correspondents comment on Milosz's persona and his work, its legacy and resonance in the world and literature.

The event is organised by the Centre de Civilisation Polonaise at the Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV), the Service culturel de l'Université Paris-Sorbonne, the Centre de Recherche en Littérature Comparée de l'Université Paris-Sorbonne and the Foundation "Centrum Badan Historycznych" in Warsaw, with the participation of the Polish Embassy in Paris, Instytut Książki / Poland, the Association des Etudiants et Diplomés Polonais, and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.

"Don, Reflets, Rivières..." / "Gift, Reflexions, Rivers..." takes place on Friday the 2nd of December 2011, at 19:00.
