A demonstration at how I perform Bakithi Kumalo's bass solo for "You can call me Al", live. Fill is played twice at each tempo.

The original used some very cool studio magic, reversing the tape for the second half of the fill. I've done my best to recreate the feel from the original recording.

I've posted a response video that has the original recorded solo, slowed down for comparison.

Here is the fingering I'm using:
Fingering:

--gg ddda aaee eaaa aaaa aeee aaad ddgg

  • Hello mate that is insane slapping, do you know where i can find the tabs for this or if you could send them? would be greatly appreciated!

  • @TheAffroManiac Thank you! I put the fingering in the comments, hopefully that's helpful.

  • Nice bass! Do you have any other videos of the bass or a review?

Is this a Metro or US Sadowsky?

  • Sorry, no other vids yet. Hopefully more coming soon.

    It's a NYC Sadowsky ultravintage.

  • what do you do with the X note?

  • It's a "dead" note. In this case, it's a "slap" with the left hand muting the strings, instead of fretting a note.

  • Sadowsky UV Jazz!!! The Best! I have one in aged Olympic white with a gorgeous brazilian rosewood fretboard and another on order with a maple fretboard that should be done in about 3 months. Roger Sadowsky builds the greatest basses on earth IMO!!! They play like a dream and they are gorgeous to look at. And ultralightweight too!!! They're a dream to play!

  • if i am not mistaken the first run was played straight on the studio version and then it was reversed for the second ,well that's what paul smon said anyway.still pretty cool

  • Did you know on the original recording, he's actually only playing half of it and the back end is the tape being manually rewinded? Paul himself has admitted this.
